I didn't mean to create this post - honest! But now that it is created, which taxonomic system is being used for this naming in Opus? I'm using IOC and even in the latest (v2.11 Jan 2012) I see no indication of a split from Rufous-naped Brush-finch for Ecuadorian birds. I'm sure this is dealt with somewhere, but I admit I haven't really searched much.

Opus is maintained on a consensus system. The base is the Clements list, with the possibility of overriding if the IOC and the Dickinson (Howard and Moore) lists agree. Specifically for the South American area, I would encourage you to look at the SACC website: http://www.museum.lsu.edu/~Remsen/SACCBaseline.html with individual links to a lot of their recent changes.

Thanks Niels.

For the record, for any other confused individuals out there, I've pasted the two current entries for Atlapetes below.

This is the line in Opus which had me confused:

Previously considered conspecific with the Rufous-naped Brush-Finch (A. rufinucha, sometimes "Bolivian Brush-Finch") under the name Rufous-naped Brush-Finch (Atlapetes rufinucha). Confusingly, following the split, both A. rufinucha and A. latinuchus are sometimes still referred to as "Rufous-naped Brush-Finch".

I think it should read:

Previously considered conspecific with the Bolivian Brush-Finch (A. rufinucha) under the name Rufous-naped Brush-Finch (Atlapetes rufinucha). Confusingly, following the split, both A. rufinucha and A. latinuchus are sometimes still referred to as "Rufous-naped Brush-Finch".

So the bird I was looking for from

Ridgely & Greenfield 2001 Birds of Ecuador - Atlapetes latinuchus, Rufous-naped Brush-Finch,

which I saw at Yanacocha, 3500m alt. northwest Ecuador - must be

George, thanks a lot for your very extensive post, where I am not sure I have digested everything.

I agree that SACC has changed the name of Atlapetes rufinucha to Bolivian BF, but that change has not (yet) propagated to Clements check list, meaning that the majority name still is Rufous-naped Brush Finch according to the rules Opus operates by.

I expect that the change will appear in the next update for the Clements list -- the SACC decision is dated 29-July-2011, about the same time that the latest Clements update came out, or at least after they closed the editing for additional changes. When that update comes out, the Opus text can (and should) change as you propose.

Cheers
Niels

Oh OK that sounds good. These Brush finches are such a confusing group, with all the reclassifying, it took me a while to work out what was going on, so I thought I might as well post my findings here… :)
