One of the two remaining Little Ringed Plover chicks was lost during the course of the afternoon, cause unknown.

Two yellow ringed Black-headed Gulls - TAMR and 2RNJ - present at the Flashes this evening.

Two further ringed BHGs seen but they were unco-operative & neither could be read. One was white ring with black characters and the other the reverse. This latter one possibly ended with 90.

A late evening update from the Flashes by Andy P:

Turnstone still at dusk. The Ruff flew off high to the east with one of the Wood Sandpiper and a Dunlin after the juvenile Peregrine went through.

pics from Saturday. not every day you get Turnstone and Ruff at Upton in the same frame. If it is sunny any time soon take a walk down the Salwarpe large amount of Damsel flies really quite beautiful as you walk down but please be careful it is a bit muddy and slippy.

A wood sand was using the same channels to the right of the hide and calling like a wood sand was doing on its first day arrival before the rain started

To answer your question Tim, the last multiple sighting of Wood Sandpiper were 2 seen at the Flashes on 6th July 2012 (JTB).

The largest count of this species was 6 on 18th August 1965 (RM) - see WMBC report for that year.

Common Sandpiper - 18 - 25th August 1971
Turnstone - 8 - 2nd September 1988
Wilson’s Phalarope - 1 - 2 records
Red-necked Phalarope - 2 - 30th April 2011
Grey Phalarope - 1 - 4 records
While trawling back through the forum for records of multiple Wood Sands at Upton Warren I found the above posted by Phil Andrews a few years ago.
Many of these figures will probably never be seen again eg 3000 Lapwing, 122 Curlew, 37 Little Stint to name but a few.

However, the records for numbers of Black-tailed Godwit (69 at the Flashes on 12th April 2013 - VW), Redshank (27 at the Moors Pool on 10th May 2016 - JTB) have been broken in recent years. So too have the numbers of Avocet - figures not too hand at the moment - and possibly Jack Snipe. The record for the number of Greenshank was also equalled on 10th May 2016 when 13 were seen at the Flashes - JTB.

Finally, it was great to see the finder of all those Godwits earlier today when Vern Wright paid a flying visit to the reserve. I'm sure all those that know Vern will join me in wishing him well as he fights against the ailments that continue to afflict him.
