Bird Photography Courses in the UK (1 Viewer)

Can anyone recommend any good photography courses in the UK specialising in bird and/or wildlife photography? I'm thinking of maybe a weekend residential course in the UK to help improve my photographic skills, and would also like to learn more about post processing in Photoshop. Thanks Nick.

Hi Nick,

This month's Outdoor Photography magazine has a feature on photo courses
and one of them mentioned is run by Neil Mcintyre. Its in Aviemore which could be a snag but the website is http://www.neilmcintyre.com

I have no knowledge of it beyond the magazine article but hope it helps

Ah, my first post, have been lurking around for a while so good to finally post something.

Another option may be an Andy Rouse event - http://www.andyrouse.co.uk/events.asp. I have no experience of them as yet but I have booked up on one of the Raptor events and will post when I have been, worth a look I would say.

Regards

Hi Mrdaz and welcome from all the staff and moderators at Bird Forum.

I hope you enjoy that course and a bit of fee back afterwards would probably be welcome

I did a one day course a few weeks ago with Loch Visions - set on the banks of Loch Awe in Argyll. It was an excellent day with a little tutorial in the morning on the basics of photography, then a few hours spent outside taking photos, then an hour or two looking at the photos from the day and a very good tutorial on Photoshop with the chance to play around with your pictures. Also included a delicious (really!) lunch on the shore and a print of your favourite photo. Oh, and all equipment is provided if you need it (Nikon D50, Sigma 70-300 lens, and a beanbag!). Philip is an excellent photographer himself, as you will see from the photos on the walls around his home! Very reasonably priced we thought at £69 for the day. If I remember rightly he also does two-day courses - one outside, the second using photoshop (I think). Maximum people on any day is 6 (though I only had 2) so you will always get attention. I came away with quite a few shots I really liked and learnt a lot.

Very highly recommended.

Also, a word about the photo opportunities - he has set up 5 'zones', giving you a chance to capture plants, insects etc and a well placed hide with bird feeders a couple of metres away and plenty of 'natural' perches, and peanut feeders and jam which attract voles and shrews within minutes!

I have just started a photo course at my local tech college.Although not specific to birding I think it will be invaluable. The course covers the basics of photography and processing with more advanced courses available.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll definitely have to get myself signed up for a course in the near future. I'm finding bird photography a bit of a steep learning curve at the moment! Cheers Nick.
