Short-toed Eagle swallowing a snake? Today Sep 2018 SE France (1 Viewer)

This bird was flying very high so I only saw the snake - I assume that's what it is - on the computer!

What a discovery! Congratulations. I'm no expert, but STE with snake is a reasonable assumption!
 
Yup. I have seen this a few times. They usually seem to carry the prey in the bill rather than in the talons - perhaps as a precaution against being bitten!
 
I've seen this very often, a short-toed eagle flying along with about 8 inches of tail dangling from the beak. As it flies on, if you are able to observe it long enough, the tail length gets progressively shorter as it is swallowed.

A couple of years ago I was also lucky enough to photograph one carrying a chameleon by the head.

Yes, that's it! Great shot. Indeed yes it did seem to wriggle and start to disappear over the minute I took photos…
