10/20/2015—Warm Wind Blowing in Your Face: Not Good when You’re Flying

Wind Continues

It was a balmy (for this time of year) 60 degrees at 4:30 am, which is indicative of the south winds that continue to bring warm air to central Wisconsin.

On the surface those winds are blowing at 10mph from the south-southwest, which would mean a direct headwind for us. We’ll be standing down today.

Maybe tomorrow… …they’ll be flyin’ through the wind.

10/23/2015—Down Today, but Up Yesterday

Today:

Windy

Winds are currently blowing from the east at 8mph on the surface in Green County, Wisconsin. Aloft, they are from the southeast at 20 knots.

We’ll be staying put for today.
http://operationmigration.org/InTheField/2015/10/23/day-24-windy/

Yesterday:

…All of the cranes took off and turned on course without hesitation and they flew directly over the crowd that had gathered at the public flyover sight….

…Eventually, number 1-15 started to show her foibles again. She would drop below the wing in the dirty air, sometimes encouraging the others to join her. Brooke gave up a few hundred feet collecting them all but 1-15 dropped behind again.

We decided to let her drop and continue on with the others rather than descend back into the turbulent surface air with all the birds. I moved in behind and below and number 1-15 moved over and accepted my wing. The others started to drop too so Brooke circled left and I took Number 1 right. She was now flying on the wing properly and I managed to climb her up to 1000 feet. But once we leveled out, she dropped back into her defiant spot. [See picture.]

I tried turning, climbing and dropping quickly but she paced every move – staying just under and behind the wing.

I planned to turn hard to the left and fool her back up but Brooke was also circling. That put the two of us close enough together that number 1-15 could clearly see her flockmates and headed over. I climbed to reduce the confusion and all the birds once again formed on Brooke’s wing….

Rain is in the area now, so tomorrow is probably off the table already. Sunday might see an opened window, but Hurricane Patricia is threatening to keep it closed for several rainy days.

10/24/2015—Double Digit Wind Speeds

Winds this morning are from the west and quite strong – gusting to 19 mph.

We’ll be staying in Green County, WI at least until tomorrow when conditions appear favorable to continue into Illinois.

Below are excerpts from Brooke Pennypacker’s 10/22/2015 Lead Pilot Report. I recommend that you first pour yourself a cup or glass of something you like drink during whatever time of day you’re reading this, rid yourself of all other distractions, then skip the excerpts and go straight to the link.

…Soon the birds lined up off the left wing as if they were really going to take today’s performance seriously as we flew over the flyover site and all those wonderful folks who rose at a mercilessly early hour in hopes of a brief glimpse at the magic of these birds….

…And so when #1-15 begins her now familiar “drop from the wing and fly in that no man’s land just below and to the side of the prop guard, where there is no lift other than her own and where the demons of fatigue await to pounce, the sweat valve ratchets open a few notches.

Each bird, as you might imagine, is an individual on the ground but even more so in the air and it is in the air that the differences often magnified….

…she eventually dropped down and fell behind far enough for Joe to skillfully move in just enough to pick her up without disrupting the other birds. She later surprised us by flying quite a little distance back join her friends as if she just didn’t want to land without them as we neared our destination.

I found out this morning—that what I had hoped would be a guiltless and unnoticed escape to a lasting and comparative semblance of tranquility.., …that what I had perceived to be a retreat to a somewhat guaranteed refuge conducive to relative and uncondemnable apathy.., …that what I had hoped would be a respectable retirement to a rather conflict-free cause—is now under assault.

From a place where I could feel comfortable resigning myself to not bother with rigged local and national political elections, commission cover-ups, wars for oil, and oligarchical take-overs of government, occasional references to environmental destruction, as it applies to birds, served to mollify a self-accusation of complete surrender.

The last time I was called to battle, I refused. Other than offering my vote, they would have to pull Alison Grimes through without me.

This time, however, the charge bugle call is being sounded by the landlords of my psychological retirement home.

USFWS ‘Vision’ Recommends Ending Aircraft-Guided Migration

On October 15th the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service posted a document outlining their vision for the next 5 year strategic plan for the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP) and the Eastern Migratory Population (EMP).

In their Vision Document, they proposed radical changes to the release methods used for the Eastern Migratory Population (EMP) including ending the use of the ultralight-guided migration technique (UL)… [Read more.]

10/25/2015.3—Lead Pilot Report Excerpts for Today’s Flight into Illinois

Burbles and Foibles and Follies

…Shortly after we launched, with the birds all eagerly forming on the wing, I began to search for the flyover site. We were low and slow and all I could see was a corn field. At the last minute a whole row of heads appeared at the end of the crop line with binoculars raised and cameras flashing — and we flew right over their heads….

…Number 2-15 has always been an odd bird. Brooke and Colleen used the scientific term when they labeled her stupid during early training at Patuxent. But over the summer she was always the first out of the pen and the formation leader on the wingtip. But thereafter, she started bouncing around like a kid faced with too many choices in a candy shop….

…Her injuries are very superficial and it all ended well but there was an interesting result. Once number 2-15 was out of the mix, the rest of the birds fell into perfect order, locked onto the wing and climbed to a thousand feet. We could have gone higher but we started down, and back into the burbles for a landing….

Help safeguard the future of Whooping Cranes

I urge the FWS to consider ACTUAL SCIENTIFIC DATA before ending the use of the UltraLight Aircraft-guided release method (UL), the most successful Whooping Crane recovery method in use. Besides yielding the best results in terms of short- and long-term survivability, pairing, reproduction, and migratory behavior, Operation Migration (OM) fulfills the FWS mandate for Whooping Crane conservation using NO TAX DOLLARS.

Based on data gathered from the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP) database , UL crane survivorship is 75% vs. 59% for the Direct Autumn Release (DAR) method, and thereafter, annual adult survival is 92% for UL cranes vs. 84% for DAR cranes. Based on these data, the probability of UL cranes surviving to the earliest confirmed breeding age (three years) is 63% vs. 42% for DAR cranes. Projecting survivorship to 10 years of age, UL cranes are three times as likely to be alive as DAR cranes (35% vs. 12%).

The UL method is completely privately funded: OM provides the staff, performs the work, and offers opportunities to capture worldwide media attention, elevating education and outreach in support of this endangered species and the wetlands upon which they rely.

Why would you shoot "the goose who lays the golden eggs" in favor of other unproven or less successful reintroduction methods? I urge you to look at the scientific data and retract your recommendation to end the UL method of Whooping crane reintroduction.

10/27/2015—No Flight Today, Tomorrow, and the Day after That

Winds are already gusting this morning from the south-southeast on the surface and are expected to increase throughout the morning to 16 mph. We’ll be staying put in Winnebago County today.

We did locate a new LaSalle County migration stop yesterday so on the next available fly day, we’ll be on our way. Looking ahead at the forecast, at this point it appears Friday will be that day.

The Adventure of a Lifetime

There was little doubt this morning when the sound of rain on the RV roof woke everyone up.

We’ll be standing down today.

Operation Migration reached its goal of two thousand signatures. With all that’s good within me, I thank anyone who helped reach that goal. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Okay, so now Operation Migration has set a new goal: three thousand signatures. As with Whooping Cranes: the more, the better.

This is our 10th day at this location and the winds continue to blow from the south. Evidence of this are the very warm temperatures we’ve been experiencing.
