Charlie Moores' Review of the EL50 Swarovision

Eagle Optics has received the new Swarovision EL 50s--10x50 is available now, & 12x50s come in later in early May. Pricey!

That's the news I've been waiting for! I just got off the phone with RE/MAX and they are sending an appraiser here tomorrow morning. If he doesn't see the termites, the house should be listed on Friday. As soon as it's sold, I'm buying me one.

I was sure it was going to be the 10x50, but after watching that video about those birders that Sarwo flew to Extremadura remarking on how easy it was to hold the 12x50s steady, I'm wondering which to buy. Oh well, with the money from the house, I can buy both next month and return the one I don't want in the 30-day trial period.

I will have to save some money for a car alarm since I will be living in my car and I want to make sure the new SV ELs don't get pinched by one of the neighbor juvenile delinquents.

Thanks for that update!

Brock

Fear not! If you bird out of your car like those birders in Extremadura birded out of their (luxury) tour bus you should be well rested and strong enough to hold the 12 x 50's without any shake.

....I understand that it's Swarovski's job to try to convince us to buy whatever they have to sell, but I can guarantee that once cooler heads have evaluated these binoculars it will be discovered the Swarovski's 998g binoculars are just as heavy on the neck as anyone else' 998g binoculars, Swarovski's 100m field is just as narrow and Swarovski's 12x is just as hard to hold still as any other 12x with a similar weight and shape.

Now that I am back in Tokyo, I need to get to a shop and check these out for myself. I am intrigued by the seemingly incompatible specs of long eyerelief and ultrawide FoV. I have the Nikon 12x50SE of similar weight now and they are impossible for me to hold rock steady. Even with Zen-like breathing control on a warm day, my pulse transfers thru my hands and causes small jiggles. Not so bad that this daytime view is useless (stargazing is impossible handheld), but the jiggle is eventually tiring on my eyes after a few hours.

That's a very nice description of what's happening with high magnifications handheld. I also can't really use 12x in the field, it just doesn't work for me. It's also the small jiggles and the pulse that make the experience less than enjoyable for me.

There seems to be a lot of individual variation though. I know an elderly birder who's been using 15x for many years now, and judging by the amount of detail he gets on a bird he must be able to somehow utilize that high magnification very well.

You might consider Swarovski's winged eye cups as an accessory to help you hold the binocular steady.

I know the optional winged eye cups that came with my Nikon 10 x 32 EDG make holding it steady much easier than holding my Nikon 10 x 42 SE. They slip right on and over the EDG's regular eyecup. I can press these winged eyecups firmly up against and just under my brows and along my temples and get a very solid on axis view with the EDG. These eyecups are quite a bit thicker than the ones on the SE. The regular eyecups on the EDG don't give support along the temples. I use the winged eyecups all the time now.

10x no 12x no 10x aghhhhh

I love birding comedy.

Your score beat me but I did see an osprey while strolling around my local bog reserve 2 nights ago.

Never seen that before in the 10 years I've been going there. Brilliant!!!

So true

Never underestimate the "bog"!

spotted this little steamer in there too which might be more an Americanism.
