Accommodation In Galloway (1 Viewer)

I am trying to organise a trip for a group of half a dozen or so at the end of Feb and would appreciate any recommendations about accommodation.

A licensed hotel, reasonably handy for Southerness, Loch Ken etc and ideally, on the coast with the possibility of some bird watching "on site".

Are you considering a self catering accommodation as I would recommend "The Old Exchange" at Threave, Castle Douglas. We have stayed 3 times and have been really pleased. It is about a mile away from Castle Douglas which has plenty of shops to get your supplies in and on the way there or back you can always have a look at Carlingwalk Loch. They do part weeks or full weeks.

It is on the roundabout of A75 so really handy for any direction,[you cant hear the traffic] it is in the grounds of Threave Estate and over the road is Threave Castle which has birdwatching hides etc.

Hope this trip report helps from one of our previous visits

If you get as far as Loch Ryan in Stranraer or even want to stay over in that direction a place I can tip you off about is The Blue Peter Hotel in Kirkcolm. WE havnt been here but bumped into the owners on their day off. They are very keen birdwatchers and were really happy to tell us of the latest sightings and extra birdwatching areas to try out. The Hotel has got really good reviews on trip advisor

Thanks for this. We need a hotel rather than self cater. Have stayed at Blue Peter which good, particularly if you like proper beer which hard to come by in Galloway. Blue Peter very handy for a longer look at Loch Ryan but of course a fair way from Loch Ken etc.
Has Wigtown got any decent hotels?

Hotel in Castle Douglas

Hi Ronjax,
I recommend the Douglas Arms Hotel, Castle Douglas for your group, as it has a range of bottled real ales from the Sulwath Brewery opposite it, local cuisine restaurant, take-aways near etc., is on the main street of CD, you can walk to Lochside Park/Carlingwark Loch for on-site birding, good in winter. It's 3 miles from Threave Estate & 9 miles from RSPB Ken-Dee reserve & 16 miles from RSPB Mersehead. You can also walk a path onto Threave Estate from end of lane past the football ground.
Hotel has free off-street parking, but parking's all free in Galloway anyhow.

If they are full, there's the King's Arms Hotel on St Andrew Street along from the main street (King Street).
Enjoy birding in Galloway, it's great! And welcome!
