Great spotted woodpecker interesting behaviour (1 Viewer)

Hello all,

I observed an interesting behaviour when I was out to make photos of some Great spotted woodpeckers. They periodically stopped hammering the trees, flew away a few meters to collect some thinner branches with leaves, flew back, and as I observed they inserted the leaves into the hole they hammered into the trunk of the tree.

I attached 2 photos of 2 different woodpeckers (one male and a female) doing this. I didn't find any reference about this behaviour, so maybe somebody here knows more about this or already observed this ... maybe the explanation is something trivial ...

Thank you very much in advance,
Istvan

Those are Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus / Carpen) winged nuts - they are taking them to hammer open to eat the seeds inside :t:
