went to the Flashes for the last 2 hours tonight. The gull roost was impressive. But the bulk of the large gulls arrived latish. As I was alone it was difficult to 'grill ' them all, but pretty sure no yellow legged or baltic type.
Species count :

A new record count for Lesser Black-backed Gulls, beating the previous best of 1,350 also counted by John at the Flashes roost on the 18th October 2014 (the day the Baltic Gull was noted last year). Also the best Black-headed Gull count of 2015.

Tomorrow sees the start of a run of over a week's worth of dry, relatively mild weather with the wind continually from the east (and apparently a long way east). Good for Yorkshire or north Norfolk - is it too late in the season for a nice sting in the tail at Upton?

I thought a "sting in the tail" is an unpleasant occurrence?

didn't arrive on Flashes until gone 11. Bobby P and myself repaired the jammed sluice, to allow a trickle of water to run off. A flock of 15 siskin fed in the Hen pool silver birches and a Cetti's sang close by.
The most obvious omission from last night were the Shoveler with just a handful present. The north fields were in the final throws of preparation before sowing. Passerines were taking advantage, with good numbers of mipits, pied wags and linnet. A small flock of swallow moved south and a coal Tit moved through the west hedgerow. A small group of redpoll dropped on to the blackthorn thicket and more mipits passed overhead.

Dave J is pretty confident he has just had a first winter Caspian Gull at the Flashes - he will post some photos and video on Twitter later

Edit: he has just sent me the photos and it looks good - sloppy forehead, long thin dark bill with no gonys angle and very leggy amongst other features
