what is it?!

Can anyone id this bird, please?

It was approximately 16" tall. Seen in San Francisco, walking on the ground.
Took off and landed on a nearby fence when approached trying for a better photo.

Looked like some sort of auk but no matches among auklets, murrelets or murres.

Apologies for the somewhat blurry photo; best shot available.

Welcome to BirdForum. Your bird is a Black-crowned Night Heron.

Can I just check, is this a bird that you couldn't identify and wanted help with? If so, you should start a thread in the Bird ID Forum:
https://www.birdforum.net/forumdisplay.php?f=114
The Quiz forum is for when you already know the identity of the bird and want to test others.

Thanks all. It looked most like that but the short beak and white legs were odd.
Trying for better photos tonight; it was hanging around a parking lot, a couple of miles from the bay.

Thanks, Andrew. I did post to the wrong forum. Thanks for the direction.
