Jinshitan areas August 3, 2014

Three separate reports today. Squirrels have been slowly returning to this area. I saw my first one around 2 years ago here and now they are appearing more and more. This one is from the Country Club today. (almost no birds there today during a quick look).

I sat on the sea wall until dark by the mudflat area in the Jinshitan Sea-farming ponds. Amazing to see so many things flying out of the channel area right at dusk. It was my first time birding with my new bins (Swarovski EL 10x42) at a time where the light was very poor. Amazing how well they did in such low light conditions!

Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds August 5, 2014

Stephen and I checked out the pond areas today after work and were pleasantly surprised by the increase in birds since I checked there last not that long ago. The temperature has been a bit on the cool side compared to the average. Tonight felt like mid-September with large numbers of swallows, egrets, etc...

The tern photographed.....is it juv. Whiskered or juv. White-winged? It seemed smaller than Whiskered Tern and also has a more complete cap than others I've seen. Any input greatly appreciated. Same bird in both pics.

Also, the Great and Intermediate Egret lined up perfectly for a nice comparison shot below.

Laotieshan August 8, 2014

Stephen and I travelled to Laotieshan Friday night and birded the last few hours of light. The highlight was when 7 Bittern rose up out of the forest and scrub and assembled together right at dusk. They climbed very high in a circular motion and soon headed out over the sea.

Laotieshan August 9, 2014

Stephen and I were keen to visit this fantastic site in early August with the goal of filling another piece of the puzzle as to what actually passes through there and when. We started at 4:15, birded the main visible migration area, and then moved into the forested areas and did a few trails. After this we sea-watched for approx. 2 hours before renting a small boat to take us out to where the Streaked Shearwaters were in the open ocean. The boat was very cheap and we had a fantastic time out among the gulls, porpoises, and Shearwaters. The driver was insistent that next time we call him a few days in advance so he could get a good supply of fish to throw overboard. He said that the sky would be black with gulls and ....... If you are going to Laotieshan, send me a message and I can get you in contact with the boat driver - very nice guy and seemed to like the idea of looking for Shearwater among the many gulls. Without any "bait", finding Shearwater was quite simple and they did come quite close to the boat.

From the visible migration spot, I saw around 150 porpoises feeding in one area with many gulls circling above. It's an amazing place. We also ran into (literally) a Tiger Keelback (snake) but I didn't think to get a photo. It was stuck on a concrete stair area and we let it go past us and into the brush.

On the area photo below it is easy to see the ridge that all the raptors take in the fall. This mountain chain extends quite a bit off the left of this picture and ends into the sea which is the southern tip of the Liaoning peninsula. Positioning oneself in view of this ridge area can be very rewarding in September and October.

A most extraordinary thing happened tonight. I went out on my deck at around 10:30 pm. There was almost no wind and clear sky. Right away I heard Wood Sandpipers calling, many of them. This happened for at least ten minutes. I have heard at least one for the past 3 nights but tonight there were many calls coming from all over the sky. It was amazing to just sit there and take it all in. During late September and October I can often hear passerines in the form of buntings, thrushes, etc... flying at night. Hearing groups of Wood Sandpiper was a very unique experience. I wonder how many?

That's brilliant Tom! One of the things I love about birding is the possibility of these out of nowhere experiences. Living on one of the best flyways in Asia helps just a tad of course!

Cheers
Mike

Mike, yes a wonderful experience. I agree that location is everything. I can see the ocean from my place and the mountains are directly behind my house. I am right on the flyway up and down the east (Yellow Sea) side of the peninsula. There is so much that I hear at night but do not record on this forum. Bird migration is a wonder of the world that few people are aware of or in tune with. I compare the raptor fest at Laotieshan each autumn to the Salmon runs where I am originally from. There is so much that we still don't understand about it as well. I find it comical reading the top books about just how exactly a small warbler navigates its way from northeast China to the tropics. Some good theories out there, but really, we are still in the dark in terms of understanding everything.

Something I always say to my students, "the knowledge of DNA is quite young but think about how important that knowledge is to our understanding of things. What is there left to discover? Think about how much we do not know" I think every generation believes they have the answers. Not long ago people believed that Swallows hibernated in holes in the ground. Today we look back with a greater understanding and excuse their ignorance in light of subsequent discovery. What will people 150 years from now say when they look at our theories? How does the Monarch Butterfly migrate north in Central and North America over several generations and then their young find their way back to the colonial winter grounds in Mexico? How does a butterfly even cross the Gulf of Mexico? The best we can do is mutter something about instinct, built-in mechanisms, and a sixth sense. Amazing stuff! Here's to continual learning and staying a studentB :)
