Drive-by Birder

I have just returned from a week in Malaga, staying at the Barcelo Malaga. From outside the hotel the bus EMT Linea 5 took us to Guadalmar and the Paraje Natural de Descomburas de Guadalhorce. This is Malaga’s equivalent of Musselburgh Lagoons but with less birders and more birds, and slightly higher temperatures.

We saw something different each day we went but always saw White-headed Duck, from the hide at Laguna Casiliero. Dragonflies were a prominent feature of most walks. Laguna Grande was usually the most productive hide. Other bird highlights included Booted Eagle, Montagu’s Harrier and Black Kite, as well as
Little Bittern, Bee-eater and Purple Heron. Viperine Snake was an addition to my meagre reptile list.

We spent a day in Ronda and the area around, Red-billed Chough was easily seen around Puente Nueva, as were Crag Martins.

Maybe early August is not the ideal time to go to Malaga for birds but it was an enjoyable overall destination.
