Maybe they just thought it needn't to be 'athena' bird.

Picked up, soggy, in a ditch? - sounds a bit more like it got into trouble or was a bit unwell tbh. Falconry Centre - maybe they do great work, but does sound fairly odd.
 
This GBB Gull couldn't fly after eating this discarded salmon. It tottered drunkenly over to the quay edge and fell into the water. :-O

I thought most wild animals don't overindulge to the point they can't move properly (excepting some reptiles temporarily perhaps)? It's a really bad survival strategy for the individuals concerned ...

True, but there are always outliers. :eat:
