Agree with male & female (or possibly immature) slaties. The females (& young) are rather variable, but it's not surprising if you haven't seen one quite this brownish before.
Well I learned two things,
1. Y’all are astute Dickensian punsters.
2. I have a crappy bird book.
that female looked dramatically different (as depicted in the photos) and my book didn’t delve into such variations, and so I came here ....
so, my bad, still- I’m very appreciative of the input here on birdforum!
