This afternoon I stopped by the farm pond where I found Semipalmated Sandpipers yesterday. They weren’t there today but were replaced by an absolute mega rarity.

380. Whimbrel

It was the first record for the county in 20 years and was a state lifer (number 279) and Preston County lifer (number 237).

I’m sitting in a motel room in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. I just got in after seeing a state lifer (number 280), my second in eight days.

386. Chuck-will’s-widow

I observed the bird in my spotlight sitting on a dead snag singing its distinctive song.

Today I made the long drive to the Ohio River Valley along the western edge of West Virginia. I had a target list of seven species that are difficult or impossible to see in my part of the state. I saw five of the seven. The fifth, Prothonotary Warbler, is not listed here because I saw it in Panama in February.

388. Warbling Vireo
389. American Herring Gull
390. American Barn Owl
391. Dickcissel

Today I added a new bird to my Year List, my first since June 8.

392. Blackburnian Warbler

I really struggled with this bird this year. I should have easily seen one in late April or early May. Since then Iíve looked every weekend in normally reliable locations and in places where others have reported them. Until today, I was just unable to find any.

Today I made the long drive to the southwestern corner of the state to chase a rarity that was found a couple of days ago. I quickly found my target; in fact I saw it before I even got out of the car.

393. Trumpeter Swan
