How to get birds......... (1 Viewer)

Hello, I’m new to the birding thing. I’m trying to get birds into my garden as my 2 year old loves to watch and feed the birds at her nanny’s house. I’ve boight a feeder pole with 3 hanging feeders, a tray and a water bowl. It’s been up for nearly two months now and the only bird that comes to it is a robin once a day. Is there anyway of getting more birds to come?
I’ve tried sprinkling food round the garden but that has only got a pigeon to the garden

Hi Middo and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators.

There is a lot of food for the birds in the open countryside just now, so things can be slow at the feeders. Just be a little more patient and I'm sure they'll come when winter bites. Water, for drinking and bathing is a big draw (an upturned dustbin lid, with a stone in the middle, will suffice).

You may get more help and advice in our Garden Birds forum

I hope you enjoy your time here with us.

Hi Middo and welcome aboard :t:

As Delia mentioned, once it gets cold you should see a lot more visitors to your feeders ;)

Hi Middo, welcome to the forum. A little more patience and I’m sure the birds will find you.

If you've got a Robin coming then the others wont be far away. It takes time for others to find the food and water and sadly depends on your location. If its a very built up area then bird populations and variety are much lower than say, in a suburban or country area. But patience, a good variety of quality birdfood in feeders should attract more into your garden. Just one request please, try to avoid cheap suet or fat balls in plastic mesh.
Good luck.

I’ve put out sunflower hearts, suet pellets & fatballs. All from Wilko as the in-laws use Wilko products and get a good variety of birds in their garden

Welcome to BirdForum! I am sure you will find lots to interest you here, and I hope you enjoy your visits. Sometimes it takes a while for birds to discover there is a new restaurant in town. :)

It took months and months to bring a large variety of birds to our garden, but the biggest increase happened after I added a suet feeder. :) The suet cages are super cheap. I can't say if there would be a difference in the suet balls ~vs~ the suet cages/blocks, but the birds will come in time. I had no idea it took so long for them to find new feeding station setups!
