Weather looks a bit more interesting later in the week - warm with ENE winds on Wednesday and Thursday with overnight rain into Friday when the wind turns right around. Hopefully will bring in Black Tern and some passage waders, perhaps a genuine Wood Sandpiper .....

Hi John it's Cliff can you tell me please what time does the reserve shut on the evening?

It doesn't really 'shut'. You can access the Moors car park at any time, but the Sailing Pool car park is locked in the evening at any time from 8pm through to 10pm. Therefore best to park elsewhere if you're planning on staying late at the Flashes.

Work Party at the Moors

We were down in numbers today with both our leaders absent - one on family duty and the other indisposed (get well soon, Paul). However, we were able to complete the task started last week: we cleared balsam from the south-east corner of the Moors (behind Amy's Marsh and in the thickets to the right of the hide). We thought that the work we did last year made it easier this time. Perhaps we are getting on top of it. There are still large clumps on the south-west corner.

Today's workers were Bob O, Bob P, Bob R, John C, Ray, Tony and me. There were no before and after photos, not even of the cake, which, unaccountably, lasted longer than usual.

Birding at the Moors

Highlights were Barnacle Goose, Snipe, Water Rail, 3 Black-tailed Godwits flying over, 4 Raven, Kingfisher, Hobby, Sparrowhawk, 2 juv Whitethroats (East Track) and 2 Goldcrests (in the trees on the causeway at Soggy Bottom).

A quick Biking Birder update - Gary is currently on Speyside aiming to work his way up to the very north of the Scottish mainland and cross over to Orkney on the 23rd. His list has advanced to 250 with Crested Tit, Snow Bunting and Ptarmigan in the last 48 hours. Capercaille would see him equal his own record.

Gary connected with Capercaille today to equal his own British green birding year list record of 251 species, jointly held with Chris Mills B :)B :):t::t:
