Cheap GPS for S. Africa? (1 Viewer)

Hi,

A colleague is leaving for S. Africa & we were thinking of getting her a GPS as a leaving present. I have two questions for you lovely people - are there any issues regarding GPS reception in S. Africa? And what budget GPS would people recommend? (we're looking at the £80-£100 price range roughly)

Thanks in advance for your help & advice :t:

hello,

If I am not wrong, GPS signals are present and usable in SA as well as in other parts of the world.

The only areas where it is told that GPS receiver do not fulfil their job, are the polar zones...

Hi, for your price range you will get a basic GPS-reciever such as Garmin Etrex or Garmin Geko without sophisticated navigation functions and map displays... The basic GPS functions work as good as with expensive recievers.

I bought a Garmin eTrex from Field and Trek earlier this year for £50. It's useful if I'm somewhere featureless, like a desert, or somewhere where maps aren't available. Otherwise - just buy a map. I personally wouldn't bother with a GPS with mapping - the data is really expensive and the screen too small.
