I've noticed that I missed a species seen on the 27th July in Mesa Verde NP, Utah
219. Phainopepla

And another from Arizona on the 24th July
220. Western Meadowlark

Sadly back in the UK now, but heading off to Kenya in ten days' time! I had an incredible time in America, and although relatively few species of bird were seen, I was expecting this to be the case as I was on a non-birding trip. I decided to pay Portland what might be final-ever visit today.

16th August, Ferrybridge, Dorset
221. Mediterranean Gull
222. Common Ringed Plover
223. Common Snipe (bit of a strange sight feeding on the shoreline!)
224. Sanderling
225. Little Ringed Plover
226. Ruddy Turnstone

Still no Redshank!

Portland Bill, Dorset
227. Little Owl
228. Whinchat
229. Northern Wheatear

Unfortunately we didn't have time to visit Lodmoor on the way back, but I will try to do so in the next week.

I've had one extra species from the 21st of July at California's South Tufa identified from photos:

230. Savannah Sparrow

August 22nd, Lodmoor RSPB, Dorset
231. Common Sandpiper
232. Ruff
233. Green Sandpiper

Butterstreet Cove, Dorset
234. European Green Woodpecker

A bit of a frustrating morning, as once again I failed to find a Redshank (where are they?!!) and missed out on a Western Bonelli's Warbler at Portland as I didn't have a simcard in my phone (it's somewhere in New York). It was, however, nice to get a few more additions to the list total, including my first Ruff in Dorset. I will try and go birding tomorrow morning, which is my final chance to do so before I head to Kenya on Wednesday.

August 24th, Meare Heath, Somerset
235. Garganey
236. Wood Sandpiper

It was nice to be able to get out and enjoy my final bird-watching experience in the UK for some time (maybe ever??). I'll try my best to add a new species before I leave on Wednesday- I'll search for Treecreepers in the garden tomorrow! Sadly yet again no Redshanks were present- I can't really believe that I've missed this species!

August 25th, Ninesprings Country Park, Yeovil, Somerset
237. Mandarin Duck
Sadly no Treecreepers still despite a long search in some perfect habitat.

I also had an extremely major setback in my plans to get to 600 species as my time working in Kenya had to be cancelled due to visa problems. I am still flying out to Kenya tomorrow but will only have a week there before heading to Australia. Really not ideal..

EDIT:
Hilfield, Dorset
238. European Treecreeper
Amazingly I finally found this species literally as the removal company packed up our last belongings. Goodbye Dorset!!!

August 26th, Hyde Park, London
239. Egyptian Goose
240. Greylag Goose
241. Red-crested Pochard
Managed to get a very quick session at Hyde Park in before heading to Heathrow to add some farely dodgy feral wildfowl to the total. They are self-sustaining though and so they do count!

Hi Gregor,

sorry to hear about Kenya, I'm sure you'll get a few good birds there in your week before you leave for Oz. PM me when you have some time and I'll give you some info on birding in Australia and a few people to contact. Are you interested in doing some pelagics?

cheers,

Rob

Are the birds which you include as having seen in Brisbane mostly in one part of the city, such as the university?

All in either Paddington or in the CBD (including on the river here), I sadly haven't had time to get anywhere else yet!!

When I am in Brisbane I always walk along the river below the CBD and through the Botanic Gardens.

Regent bowerbirds are amazing, aren't they! I still remember my first, at O'Reilly's in 2008.

They really are extraordinary, I haven't seen many birds anywhere close to being as brightly-coloured! I will definitely be heading out to O'Reilly's as soon as I can, and I certainly need to head to the botanical gardens- I remember seeing some extremely tame Buff-banded Rails there!
