Going birdwatching and not seeing anything

I once went birdwatching at a place near where I live and didnt even see a single bird!
Is this a common occurence. Is it a world record.

It certainly can be, particularly at midday in late August, with the breeding season mostly over and with both adults and fledged young lying doggo.
