2nd November.

5 Small Coppers seen together still flying in the Pennine foothills on the Greater Manchester/Derbyshire border. Daytime temperature of only 6 degrees but 2 were spiralling and landed with wing fluttering courtship display. Hardy little creatures.

November 6th. One Small Copper still hanging on at Ludworth Quarry, in Greater Manchester. Roosting on a ragwort but when I returned 30 minutes later it had flown. Day temp today 12 degrees but with a stiff southerly wind. The slope below the quarry is SW facing but not particularly sheltered. The ragwort where it was roosting is central in the photo.

Cheers, John

Despite the wind and rain, a Red Admiral landed on my lounge window for a few minutes this morning.

Not from here ...good showing till late October, then a dash of show and frost totally finished it. Will not see any more till spring now.

Saw a thread somewhere recently, either here or atropos. where a communal butterfly year-list was being kept. I was surprised that a couple were seen on Jan first, another a week or so later and then maybe another two before end of Jan/mid-Feb. All the usual ones, of course, Small Tortoiseshell, Brimstone etc but since I've never seen a butterfly before third week of Feb, I was impressed.

Do those species hibernate? I've found hibernating Red Ad & Peacock at work, which would have enabled me to kick off a Butterfly Yearlist on day one, were I to keep such a thing.
