wagtail help (Pied v African v White)

Hi there. I am struggling a bit with Wagtails in the UK!

I found a complete list of birds on the internet which I use within Lightroom to tag my bird photos.

I took some photos of a Pied Wagtail - went to tag it and there was no "Pied" Wagtail - lots of wagtails but not Pied. The logical possibilities seemed to be either White Wagtail or African Wagtail. I can't work out whether White Wagtail is the same as Pied Wagtail or they are separate. There seems confusion on the internet on this. If they are not the same is the African Wagtail the same as the Pied? I am getting in a bit of muddle - any enlightenment would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Pied is the likely/resident 'black and white' Wagtail in UK. That said at migration time there are numerous White Wagtails - which is the 'european' version.

Most are straight forward but if in doubt you need to check the colour of the rump. In UK Pied its Black....

Interesting. Thanks guys. So my taxonomy listing lists the following Wagtails under the heading Wagtails Pipits

African Pied Wagtail
Cape Wagtail
Citrine Wagtail
Eastern Yellow Wagtail
Forest Wagtail
Grey Wagtail
Japanese Wagtail
Madagascan Wagtail
Mekong Wagtail
Mountain Wagtail
Western Yellow Wagtail
White Wagtail
White-browed Wagtail

So based on that listing should I assign my bird to "White Wagtail" (as I infer from Andy that I should do) or is my listing missing the "Pied Wagtail" (which I feel is what rosbifs is saying)? Sorry if I'm being dense.

List under White but note the race like many do.

Racial ID of Wagtails is complex, especially Yellow.
