As per title, I am after an ID guide for UK Insects. I currently have "Insects of Britain and Western Europe" by Michael Chinery first edition. It is perfectly serviceable but lacks a lot of common names. It used to be the go to book back in the day but what else is there to recommend?

Doesn't have to be field pocketable.

Thanks

A Comprehensive guide to Insects of Britain & Ireland by Paul Brock is pretty good. a photo guide. The author also has done similar guides to the New Forest area + one covering southern Europe.

The same author has a new guide due in December called Britain's Insects- part of the Wild guides series.

There's the second edition of Brock, the lack of common names is because in many cases, they don't exist.

Or this which becomes available in December - I just bought a couple Dragonfly guides in the same series and they're superb.

They're the same as I mentioned above, though useful to have the links.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'm not usually a fan of photo guides but the Brock book lots good.

Regarding common names, Chinery doesn't even have common names for the dragonflies!
