Final Post for El Valle, Panama (1 Viewer)

Two more from El Valle de Anton.

The first seems to have the yellow cap extending behind the eye so it makes me think either a Thick-Billed Euphonia or a Yellow-Crowned Euphonia. I think the depth of the cap should rule out the more common Yellow-Throated Euphonia. Thoughts?

The second photo I have no reasonable idea on but the bright red eye is certainly interesting.

I'm inclined to agree with you. I've gone through every raptor with a red eye with a back anything like that and compared them with range maps and it looks narrowed down to a Double-Toothed Kite. Thanks for the tip.

If anyone disagrees, please let me know.

I assume no speculation on the first bird?

Exactly on the Euphonia - yellow throat makes it Thick-billed Euphonia.

On the raptor, structure and the tail banding look good for Double-toothed Kite. I don't think that Roadside Hawk, Short-tailed Hawk, or Broad-winged Hawk should show tail banding like that at any age, and the kind of small, square head is something I associate with Double-toothed Kite. There's a lot of geographic variation in some of those species, however, and I haven't been in Central America in years, and I'm not looking at any field guides at the moment, so all caveats offered :)
