Grackles have taken over my feeders. So much so that they empty my big solar feeders in 2 days and are costing me a great deal of money. Worse, they've chased away all but a few housefinches and one brave boreal chickadee. I haven't seen my dozens of other birds in over a week.
I bought a Heritage Farms squirrel-proof feeder that is supposed to work on grackles as well. It didn't. Even on its most sensitive setting the grackles still feasted merrily while my finches sat on the fence watching.
I'm going to save up to order a caged feeder online so only my little birds can possibly get in to feed, but that will take me a bit (budget is pretty tight at the moment). In the meantime, I was wondering if window feeders discourage grackles because they are so shy of coming too close to the house? Do those tube feeders with the spirals running the length of the tube instead of perches work? Or can grackles grip the spiral perch easily?
Thanks in advance!
