Hello,
I live in Northern California and have some bird feeders in my back yard. I use millet in one and Nyger seed in the other. This morning I saw a bird I hadn't seen before - usually the only birds that visit are sparrows, housefinches, cowbirds, doves, and goldfinches, and sometimes a Cooper's hawk. I was able to find the bird on this site by searching images on Google. It's a white-crowned sparrow, and looks very different from the house sparrows. The beak looks larger, is yellow, and the black and white stripes on its' head are very dramatic. The soft beige coloring on its' breast and longer tail set it apart. It may be one of the subspecies. I am very glad I was able to find this site, and now will keep looking for this bird to return.
