Coney Meadow and Adjoining Areas (4 Viewers)

A Peregrine perched on a pylon near Middleton Grange this morning.

A Little Egret along the river at New Mill.

Four Swallows over Sinton Lane and three more over Hawford.

Eight Siskins over Tapenhall.

Redpoll and Siskin over Hawford.

Tufted Duck, Meadow Pipits, Skylarks, Ravens, Yellowhammers, Reed Buntings, Grey Wagtail, Buzzards, Kestrels etc.
 
Yesterday evening at Coney:

Little Egret flew over due west.
108 Canada Geese over towards Westwood in 2 flocks.
2 Water Rails calling.
 
My first Redwings of the autumn this morning - three widely separated small flocks plus a few single birds.

Eleven Grey Partridges near Salwarpe this morning.

Peregrine near Salwarpe this morning plus one near Knight's Grove on Friday.

Little Egret between Salwarpe and Ladywood - also seen yesterday.

Flock of 21 Siskins over Coney this morning plus a few here and there over the weekend.

A few Redpolls flying over in various places.

Tufted Duck near Chatley yesterday.

A few Chiffchaffs around Salwarpe.

Lots of Red Admirals, Speckled Woods, Comma and, yesterday, a Brimstone.

Meadow Pipits, Skylarks, Yellowhammers, Kestrels, Nuthatches, Kingfisher, Grey Wagtails, Goldcrests, etc.
 
A male Tawny Owl at Salwarpe yesterday evening calling frequently.

200+ Pied wagtails roosted plus a very small flock of Starlings. A Sparrowhawk flew through.

Pheasants, Red-legged and Grey Partridges calling at dusk.
 
A Little Egret this morning at New Mill.

Three Mandarin Duck at Hawford yesterday morning.

Increased numbers of Redwings on Friday plus 3 Fieldfares over Sinton Lane.

Large flock of Meadow Pipits around the dung heap near Sinton Lane farm (100+) on Friday. Lots of Skylarks in various places - including a flock of 17 around Egg Lane.

Small flocks of Siskins and a few Redpolls over in various places.

Roosting Starlings (150+) and Pied Wagtails (c200) on Friday evening at Coney.

Grey Wags, Kingfisher, Ravens, Goldcrests, 2 Treecreepers, 2 Nuthatches, Grey Herons, Cormorants, Buzzards, Sparrowhawks, Kestrels, Bullfinches, etc.
 
A Ring-necked Parakeet just flew over Coney. Wayne D also saw it at Westwood a couple of minutes later.

A new bird for me here.

A Westwood patch tick for Wayne also.

Fieldfares arriving in good numbers with several flocks including one of 60+ yesterday at Tapenhall. Lots of Redwings around.

Small flocks of Siskins widespread and Redpolls in ones and twos.

Cormorants frequent overhead including a flock of 10 on Friday.

Tufted Duck near Chatley yesterday and Friday.

Water Rails calling Coney Meadow.

Yellowhammers Sinton Lane and near Egg Lane.

Ravens and lots of Jays around.

Blackcap seen but no Chiffchaff this week.

Skylarks, Meadow Pipits, Grey Wagtails, Kingfisher, Grey Herons, Goldcrests, Treecreepers, Coal Tits, Nuthathes, Green and Great Spot Woodpeckers, Buzzards, Sparrowhawks, Kestrel, Miatle Thrushes
 
Three Hawfinches perched in tree near Salwarpe church along path sloping down to canal - woohoo!!! Fantastic. Seems like there's loads of birds around today. Had a flock of 15 Redpolls Coney - all the ones I saw perched were lessers.

Yellowhammers (inc several over Salwarpe), Tufted Duck (drake), Skylarks (>30 Sinton Lane area), Water Rails (3+ Coney), Linnets, Grey Herons, Kestrels, Coal Tits, Siskins, Fieldfares, Redwings, Mistle Thrushes, Goldcrests, Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Cormorants, Meadow Pipits, Nuthatches, Sparrowhawks, Grey Wagtails, Pied Wagtails, Kingfisher, R L Partridges, Buzzards, Ravens, Goldfinches, Greenfinches, Bullfinches, House Sparrows, starlings, Song Thrushes, Long-tailed Tits, 3 Canada Geese, Mute Swans, Reed Buntings, Redpolls, Moorhens, etc.
 
Previous sightings of Hawfinch on the patch:

7th October, 2012 (4, Coney Meadow)
13th October, 2012 (2, Coney Meadow)
31st October, 2015 (1, Coney Meadow)

The above are my personal observations. In addition, I saw several possible flyovers in October, 2012 (e.g. over Copcut and over Droitwich Woods).

Brian Stretch saw a Hawfinch in December, 2005 in Salwarpe Churchyard (I think whilst looking for a Firecrest) and I think Steve Whitehouse saw or heard one around the same time also.
 
A fairly quiet weekend on the patch.

A male Blackcap caught and ate a wasp at Salwarpe on Friday.
Drake Tufted Duck near Chatley.

Treecreeper, Cormorants, Nuthatches, Kingfishers, Skylarks, Meadow Pipits, Ravens, a few Siskins, Goldcrests, Yellowhammers, Grey Wagtails, Fieldfares, Redwings, Mistle Thrushes, Reed Buntings.
 
A Chiffchaff and a male Blackcap around Salwarpe churchyard today plus Goldcrests and at least two Nuthatches.
At least 50 Skylarks concentrated around a couple of fields near Sinton Lane farm.
Water Rails along the canal at Tapenhall (2), Hawford and Salwarpe plus others in Coney reedbed.
1500+ Starlings roosted this evening in Coney but didn't put on much of a display - just dropped in in groups up to 300 birds.

A few Redpolls and Siskins around Salwarpe.

Most of the usual species for the time of year - Redwings, Fieldfares, Meadow Pipits, Yellowhammers, Reed Buntings, Grey Wagtails, Cormorants, Grey Herons, Pied Wagtails, Coal Tit, Mistle Thrushes, Ravens, Sparrowhawks, Kestrels, Buzzards, two species of Woodpeckers, etc.

A Coot on Tapenhall pool on Friday
Four Snipes Coney on Friday - they're late to arrive this autumn.
Two Little Owls Linacres Paddocks this morning.
Tufted Duck between Chatley and Hawford
Chiffchaff Salwarpe churchyard on Friday
A few Redpolls and Sikins around
Most of the usual species including 2000+ roosting Starlings at Coney this evening.
