Hi all

Weather has not be too helpful for ringing on Gib.these last few weeks, too many westerlies, poor numbers of migrants, only small numbers of Willow Warbler,Iberian Chiffchaff,Bonellis Warbler,Orphean Warbler,Subalpine Warbler,Pied Flycatcher,Redstart,Nightingale,Whitethroat,Spotted Flycatcher, and Reed Warbler.

A few Red Necked Nightjars and Scops Owl around but none trapped so far.

Good numbers of Garden Warbler though.

Over last couple of days the first Northern Blackcaps have started to filter over.

What are the best conditions for autumn ringing, north east/west winds?
For spring would it be south easterlies?

We're getting goldcrests, willow warblers, grey wagtails, wheatears and terns passing through on the Wirral coast.

re Gib.ringing

Hi Pajarero

For Gib.ringing at any time of year the best winds are from the East (Levanter),then the unique Levanter cloud forms across the top of the rock, but if there are cloudless skies above ,most of the birds fly straight over the top.

We can at a pinch get away with a light westerly, but we really need good cloud cover in the area,a some overnight rain always helps the cause to get the birds down.
This autumn we have had a lot of westerlies but they are excellent for raptor passage.,cannot have it both ways!!!!!

We get a small passage of wheatears on the rock, usually seen on the army areas called windmill hill flats.

cheers

I remember the Levanter well Richard from my hols on Gib.

If all you have to worry about is wind direction and still get great raptor passage then your're not doing bad!
I just missed you in chat last night. Will catch you sometime.
