The entries best fitting the theme are selected for the voting booth.

The overall standard of entries was very high this month. It was tough selecting the final 30. Several good entries unfortunately didn't make the final selection.

Okay, it's just that's not helpful advice for working out what you should submit in the future or whether you should even bother. All the pictures best fit the theme because they're all doing exactly what the competition asks for: birds in flight. I wasn't expecting to make any real progress as I've only been taking pictures for a few months, but some genuinely useful advice on how the selection process works might help persuade more people like myself to submit entries going forward. At the moment I've no idea what I did wrong.

Thumbs up

There were half a dozen real crackers which caught my eye + the one I voted for. Well done all. Some of the sharpness is amazing.

Yeah it's a shame you can only vote for one.

Your entry was decent enough with the Skylark in a good pose and nicely exposed. Composition wasn't great with it being so far to the left of the frame which could have been improved by cropping to reduce the empty area to the right. Focus looks pretty good but the bird does look a little soft and low contrast which a little more sharpening/adjustment may have improved. The background let it down a little as well being against that red object.

Generally we're looking for entries with some impact. Quite often that means they have to be well taken with good sharpness and good exposure, but that's not always the case as with a couple of the entries this month. Subject and setting can be just as important as can theme interpretation.

A good guide is to look back through the 'monthly competition winners' forum in the gallery and the previous years voting booths in this forum. The themes are listed with the winners so you can see what the membership most liked.

The strength of competition varies from month to month. Sometimes it's stronger than others so I'd say it's always worth entering if you have a photo that fits the theme.

I've watched the slideshow and I can't vote. There are several photos there that, to my eye, are stunningly good. I'll need to come back another time and see if I can decide how on earth to pick a favourite. Well done to all the entrants.

Agreed - very very very good images

The top 5 should be filtered and then a decision made

If you just vote for one out of 30, anything can happen, especially if only a few votes are cast, IMHO

………………...

But I just voted and it seems there is a clear front runner which got my vote, well done ……. but there were 2 others which were "close" for me

IMHO the Peregrine and the Marsh Harrier are very good, with no votes yet as are the "sunset" type shots

Would it be possible to view the results without voting?

On completion of the voting the results appear but not before unless you first cast your vote.

Hi bennmea

Unfortunately there are a few restrictions placed on new members, which you can read more about here.

The time will soon pass, I'm sure, though maybe not in time to vote in this competition.

No we're taking a couple of months break.

It appears that interest in the competitions is waning. The number of entries and votes has been dropping for several months now.

It's sad to hear the competitions are taking a break. However I do agree it may re- kindle photographers enthusiasm. I hope you bring the non competitive December greetings back though! I love looking at these.

I would like to thank everyone for their great comments and for voting my Stonechat on Foxglove the overall winner of Birds in Flight. It means much more knowing that it has been voted by talented and enthusiastic photographers.

Thank you to Rob for the fabulous prize. I received it on Tuesday after the competition ended.

Thank you once again. John Barlow
