Lammergeier nesting in Picos de Europa (1 Viewer)

A pair of Lammergeiers Gypaetus barbatus is currently incubating eggs at a nest in the Picos de Europa in the Cantabrian Range, N Spain. This is the first recorded instance of nesting in the Picos since the 1930s and the first in the Range since the 1960s. The pair, which was formed in 2014, is derived from a reintroduction programme using translocated Pyrenean birds. Two further pairs, this time derived from released captive-bred individuals, are nesting in Andalucía, in the Sierras de Cazorla and Segura - formerly also a traditional haunt.

Great news lets hope they stick with it! Normally, takes a few 'practice' years before success. We have one very successfull pair here with 4 young raised in the last 5 years but then one pair 2 and one pair none over the last 5 years!!

Coming into the most critical period now....

Great news Ernest, plenty of food and habitat there for them too. Is there a website regarding the Spanish reintroduction schemes?
