Beavers near Blairgowrie

A quick blog on Beavers (plus Otter) near Blairgowrie, Tayside, Scotland, last week: http://www.jameslowen.com/blog-7-aug-2017-beaver.html

We went with Bob Smith, who now charges (a very reasonable) £50/group. He also has a Pine Marten hide available - £100, seven regular individuals - which we sadly lacked time to visit.

Scotland

Just catching up from my trip to Scotland a couple of weeks ago.

Cracking Beavers at loch of the Lowes.
Fossorial Water voles in Glasgow excellent to see them but strange seeing them in habitat more suitable for rats.
Red Squirrels, wood mice, bank and field voles at Loch Garten

No pine marten at the Rothiemurcus hide (my usual place was closed the week I went) but badgers, red and roe deer mice and voles from the hide.
Mountian Hares - Glenshee

Feral goats in Dumfries and Galloway and Bottlenosed dolphins at Channonry Point.

The reindeer seem to be roaming free on Cairngorm, they were on the road near the car park

Our local beavers have been very busy, we've been putting up some protection on favoured trees. Canada Day (July 1st), we had 16 hours without power after one felled a tree on the electricity line! Made for a very relaxing day here.

I have been busy lately but the highlights are: views but no photos this year of Edible Dormice at Wendover; lots and lots of Red Fox action consisting of a new stable pair - vixen White Tip and dog fox Big Whitey (the former is completely habituated to me and Marion, the latter is still quite shy); a pair of Muntjac at work of which I've got pix of the male; Daubenton's Bats at The Millhouse pub/restaurant at North Warnborough (food, real ale and bats all recommended); and an interesting bat walk at Arundel WWT with Sussex Bat Group yielding Noctule, Serotine, more Daubs, Soprano, Common and Nathusius's Pipistrelles and a rescue Brown Long-eared Bat; great views of Grey Seals on the Ythan Estuary en route to Shetland.

Now on Shetland seeing Otters daily, our local dog otter has been in the bay outside our house all day today along with some Grey Seals.

I'll stick some pix up over the next day or two.

Hungary was a great experience, pretty full on with 0330 starts each day and late finishes due to making the most of evening light as well as morning.

They really are, not just the angles and backgrounds but the activity from Red-foots, Rollers, Lesser Grey Shrikes, Kestrels and so on. There are other hides set in forest, in hedges in puszta, portable hides for slapping down at Bee-eater colonies, floating hides in wetlands.... awesome stuff. The guide, Istvan, has nestboxes all over the place as well, and knows where almost everything else nests or roosts. Mind you, trying to match his work rate is hard!

Thank you very much! Well worth the money and effort I reckon. Anyway, bit of a catch up on British mammals, which doesn't amount to much this year, foxes first:

Red Fox vixen (White Tip)

Red Fox Dog (anon) scratching and yawning near my office X 2

Red Fox vixen (White Tip again) X 2

I have more and perhaps slightly better, but I'm having IT issues and haven't been able to finish them off yet.

Finally a Muntjac buck, also at work, and a series from the Ythan Grey Seal colony on the way here. It was already starting to get a bit scrappy among the seals in anticipation of the breeding season.
