I live in a rural area, where the farmers have destroyed everything which encourages wild life. The hedges are skimpy and over-managed. So we have to content ourselves with little brown jobs, tits and chaffinches.

My favourite is the little dunnock. For the last few days I have noticed a very much darker dunnock visiting. It is almost black. Is this a gender thing, or perhaps an age thing ?

Hi Septimus and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators.

I love Dunnocks, they're a much under-rated species with lovely plumage markings. They're possibly quite variable in the depth of their colour but it sounds like you have one that is melanistic, which you can read more about in our Dictionary, HERE.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Welcome to Birdforum! I am sure that you will find lots to interest you here and I hope that you enjoy your visits.
