OK, I want to start. When do I a) buy a nestbox, and b) set it up. Also WHERE do I set it up and is there anything else? I always wanted a nestbox in the garden but I had a cat so it was pretty much impossible.

Hi Mabel

There is a pretty good page of information at http://www.rspb.org.uk/gardens/whatyoucando/nestboxes/index.asp. You can buy a nestbox at any time, but putting it up before the breeding season is best so that the birds can check them out. Last year I put one up in August and a few more in February, and the August one and one of the February ones was used.

Don't set up any nestbox in a south or southwest facing situation, just in case we get any hot summer sun (!). You could end up with roast baby birds.
