[IOC recognises Megascops centralis as a distinct monotypic species; eBird/Clements recognises centralis as a valid subspecies (and distinctive monotypic ssp group) of M guatemalae sl; whilst König & Weick 2008, H&M4 and Holt et al 2015 (HBW Alive) treat centralis as a synonym of vermiculatus.]
Dantas et al certainly make no mention of centralis. However their sample of vermiculatus is from the Achiote Road, Panama – possibly within the presumed range of centralis...?Am I right in saying that it looks like Dantas, Weckstein, Bates, Krabbe, Cadena, Robbins, Valderrama & Aleixo resolved much of the M. guatemalae-vermiculatus complex but left out and/or forgot Choco Screech Owl M. centralis like some others before them?
