Trystan’s 2018 world list (1 Viewer)

02/6/18

Having failed to find any birding destinations for June, I shuffled plans around and travelled with my wife to Mexico for 10 days, with car rented and staying in Chichen Itza. Not a birding trip, but plenty of opportunity to get some new species including two guided days out in amongst.

Going to write a brief report in the relevant forum so will just stick to listing the dates, species and locations here.

After not quite going for the Audouin's gull on Friday evening, I had hoped it might be available this weekend so when it failed to do so I thought the weekend may end up being a write off, however, a second Yorkshire mega in 3 days put this right.

Spurn

590. (214.) Greater sand plover - 1st UK

Managed to get views of it before it was flushed by a Peregrine this morning.

North cave

---. (215.) Wood sandpiper

After some frustration at being given the run around by Franklin’s gull over recent weeks, missing it by an hour on one occasion and it being present at times when I couldn’t go and disappearing at times when I could, I had decided to head up to the area for roseate terns this weekend and hope to cross paths with it or that it may be refound.

Instead, news of Buff breasted sandpiper at Blacktoft meant a different route and an alternative way to get my 300th Yorkshire bird (at least as long as lesser and common redpoll are not lumped).

Blacktoft sands

Lots of waders on offer here including the aforementioned sandpiper.

591. (216) Buff breasted sandpiper (1st Yorkshire)

With 2 others in the car, petrol costs were not unreasonable so decided after this early success to revert to the original plan.

South Gare

592. (217.) Roseate tern

Took a lot longer than hoped for to finally get one amongst the common, sandwich and 1 little terns and a few more waders to complete an impressive number of charadriformes seen today.

I see that the Franklin’s gull continued to taunt during the week before disappearing for the weekend. Had rather more luck doing some sea watching at Flamborough.

594. (219.) Great skua
595. (220.) Balearic shearwater

Along with the currently resident pied crow - not sure what to do with that one on the list.

Out on the Wirral today, managed 2 out of 3 targets, the spotted crake proving to be too elusive.

Hilbre Island

One of those weeks, only just getting around to updating from last Sunday at Spurn.

601. (227.) Common rosefinch

The only addition, although retrospectively rather amusing to watch everyone trying to string a pheasant into a corncrake, it was a bit annoying at the time, twice leaving the rosefinch area on dodgy news.

Probably also able to stick my previously undisclosed Marsh warbler on the list with breeding season now over.

602. (228.) Marsh warbler (1st Yorkshire)

23.9.18

Crosby marina

603. (229.) Grey phalarope

Nice displays from hen harrier and Merlin at parkgate on the Wirral but the pallid harrier appears to have moved on.

30.9.18

Long drive today to see the Beluga down in Kent. Much further than I’d normally twitch but it seemed a fairly safe bet and with 3 in the car, costs were acceptable.

The beluga spent all the time I was there closer to the other bank but was pretty active allowing numerous scoped views as it came up for air.

A couple of nice year ticks on the way back north too.

Near Royston

604. (230.) Pallid harrier - very showy, even perching up but with an injured right leg.

Longstanton

605. (231.) Pectoral sandpiper

07.10.18

Speculating on the weather for a day at spurn today, dipping an American golden plover in Lincs along the way.

Spurn

238. (232.) Rose coloured starling - third attempt at this species this year and connected easily. Index number has been adjusted due to an earlier error from Cameroon.
606. (233.) Jacksnipe
607. (234.) Barred warbler
608. (235.) Snow bunting

Now having passed my previous best world year.

20.10.18

Long weekend planned in Edinburgh so very pleased at the news of 2 Gull billed terns to grab on the way up. Hoping for black scoter on the way back down!

Nr Hexham

—-. (236.) Gull billed tern - 1st UK
