Camoflaging a tripod (1 Viewer)

Having got a camoflaged jacket and trousers for when the weather gets a bit colder and a ghilli suit, i`m looking at ways to conceal my tripod, i have some netting but wondered how the more experience of you go about fixing it to a tripod given the legs slide up inside themselves.

Personally I wouldn't bother - I've never added camo to a tripod and never found it to be an issue. That said I don't wear camo either, for me the way you move is far more important than what you wear.

Well that would depend entirely on what colour your tripod is in the first place. These days most tripods come in black or with the odd bit of green thrown in here or there in which case I'm with Pete and I wouldn't bother.

That said I have an old pair of Velbon Aluminium legs which are silver and I certainly wouldn't want to be out with them like that. The cheapest and simplest solution if you are intent on camo-ing your tripod legs would be a roll or two of camo tape that you'd just wrap around them. You can probably pick some up at fishing shops and the like as well as online camo specialist retailers like Wildlife Watching Supplies or Stealth Wildlife etc.

Congrats, you are on your way to better field craft and better pics.:t:

Wild birds tend to be skittish of all things shinny so leave the mirrored sunglasses, metal jewlery, and silver/gold watches at home. Because their vision is apparently sensitive to UV spectrum, light, bright, and vivid colors should be avoided. When I am at our ranch I use camo netting and the most important thing is to reduce your profile. So best to get as low to the ground as you can be confortable for a few hours. Also has the advantage of giving better perspective to your pics. Getting into position before sunrise, especially around ponds/lakes also yields more success and the light is at its best.

good luck and have fun!

You may find if you put tape on the legs it weill either jam them when you try to retract them or rip the tape off as legs are made to be tight to start with so thats why people dont do it just use your netting ,but i dont use camo on the tripod as its your shape and movement that birds see thats why camo helps break up your body shape as tripods dont have a human form the birds wont be bothered by them.

As long as the larger parts of your tripod are not shiny bare metal -like the tubes on some older Manfrotto models - there is no point on wrapping camo covers around it. The Black, Green or Gray coating will do.
However, some of the wraps offer some protection for the user, such as padding for carrying the thing over your shoulder, or insulation when out in subzero temperatures (touching bare metal with bare skin at -20C hurts).

The only thing I do once in a while -espl. when staying put for some time is the plan- is to throw one of these camo sniper scarfs over the whole rig to dissolve its outline. Needless to say that when in a hide I am not worried about camo ;)

Can anyone recommend a particular brand? Web-tex/ Jack Pyke / Realtree / Helicon / suggestions?

What about those big camo bags that cover camera and tripod?

Brand of what to do what? Camo material, hide, ........

This particular threat has moved from putting camo on a tripod to putting everything including the body behind the camera into a blind.

So being a bit more specific with your request would be extremely helpful.

Some of the "brands" you mentioned, i.e. Realtree I know, are more like a trademark for patterns that can appear on everything from boots, clothing, camo material, blinds, gun stocks, knifes etc. depending who pays for the licence to use it. You can even get bed sheets with the camo patterns.

I've ended up getting an ameristep doghouse hide so I have a ghilli suit anda piece of jack pyke camouflage material to sell now

Here's mine, the top section of the legs can be done with tape, the two bottom sections have to be covered with material allowing you to unclip the 2 bottom sections to adjust the height, will take new photos to explain how its done if interested(old photo attached)
Just buy some good material and make your own hide, made to measure and a lot cheaper.
