Sparrow? Montreal, Canada (1 Viewer)

Right after filling the feeder at dawn this morning, this guy was there in a flash. Not the usual habit of the 2 dozen House Sparrows I have hanging around and looks nothing like them.
I've searched my Sibley 3 times over and can't put an id on this guy.

Help is greatly appreciated.

Did you consider Purple Finch or House Finch?

Thanks for the reply Marc. Yes I did and looked at all the possible thick billed birds in the Sibley but no luck.
I have only 10 months experience in birding and maybe the molting is what's confusing me.
