Etymology of Soft-plumaged Petrel Pterodroma mollis (1 Viewer)

The English and Latin names of Pterodroma mollis both suggest that its feathering is particularly soft. Anyone know if this is the case (e.g. relative to other Southern Ocean Pterodroma)? And, if so, can anyone hazard a guess as to why?

Bizarre question, but...

southerners are always soft........

I didn't notice Fea's as being particularly "soft plumaged" ( the bl**dy beaks aren't, anyway ) when I had one in the hand in Cape Verde. It's probably something to do with the soft grey colour on the underparts of the southern birds.
