Our guide explained that leeches are an indication of a healthy ecosystem.
If there are no larger mammals, there won't be food for the leeches.
So we should happily accept that in a natural landscape, we too are a potential food source.
I'd worry if the leeches are disappearing.

I believe large mammals are supposedly recovering if anything in cat tien (is that right?)
So shortage of leeches more likely linked to climatic changes?

I feel a bit like kent brockman extolling the benefits of global warming but i’m not going to complain too much about a leech free experience....

Well, if the leeches don't recover, it might indicate the large mammals are not recovering either.
That said, very much agree that it is disconcerting to look down and see leeches hurrying towards ones feet....

Short Leech update from Cat Tien!

Oct 2018, rainy season and indeed very wet: tons of leeches and quite a few bites despite leech socks and all.
Feb 2019, dry season, very dry: not a single leech encountered.
