Has anyone used a 1.4X or 2X EX teleconverter on this lense, I am buying the 50-500mm this week for birding. I am not planning on getting a teleconverter but salesman indicates it can take either of the two telconverters listed.

2x will be an absolute no. You'll lose far too much detail. I have used a 1.4x on my Tamron 200-500 with only little success. Works OK when near to the bird and you just want a close-up shot, but generally, if the bird is too far away without a converter, don't bother.

What Camera are you using with it? If a Canon, it is my understanding it won't work on anything except a 1D version. Definitely won't work on the 20D even with the pins taped.

Just to clarify, it will work but not on AF. I do not own this lens but from what I have read it does not take a tc very well from a IQ point of view.
Have you thought about the new Sigma 150-500 OS lens which is just coming into the shops now - no detailed reviews yet but early sample shots look reasonably promising.

Roy, thanks for clarifying my post, I did mean to say wouldn't autofocus - but left it out somehow.
