On Lord Howe Island, Flesh-footed Shearwaters are starving because their stomach are full of plastic and have no room for food.

The human race has a lot to answer for yet we're still allowed to reproduce like the proverbial Rabbit.

It's heartening at least, to see the scientists on hand with a stomach wash in order to help the birds they can.

Prevention is one thing as proposed by certain governments but, isn't it time for a concerted, Ocean clean up? Task some vessels to trawl for plastics in problem areas?

The damage that we have done is indeed terrible. There is a campaign here to stop restaurants handing out straws. It is ground swell campaign that a lot of the public and restaurants are buying into. Our legislation has passed a law banning plastic bags. I would love to see plastic water bottles banned completely.
A few years ago, a child went missing here on the Island. A woman decided that to draw attention to the search for the missing child, she would release thousands of balloons with the child's picture on them. The story made the local news with much praise for the kindness of the lady. Some of the local weather people quickly pointed out that the prevailing winds on the coast where the woman lived would carry the balloons out to sea with very little likelihood of them every floating over land. Many of us protested her actions but it did no go, she went ahead anyway. I wonder how many turtles and sea birds died as a result of her kindness?
