Visiting NY in summer (1 Viewer)

Hi everyone,

Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but I just got accepted into an internship program on Long Island for the summer. I would love to know about some great birding places to visit during the summer. I'm from California so many birds, even common ones, will be new to me. I'm planning on going to Syracuse too at some point so I would like to know about places around there too. Any and all help is appreciated. (This might seem funny, but I cannot wait to see a blue jay!) Thanks!!

Hi and welcome to NY,
Long Island is a stretch, about 100 miles, so transportation matters.
The best known places are the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and then the Calverton Grasslands, but obviously there is lots of shore and seabird opportunity.
A good summary, albeit NYC centric, is here: http://nycbirdreport.com/sites/1/highlights.html
The NYC Audubon is active http://www.nycaudubon.org/home/
There are lots of helpful experts, Don Riepe at JBWR is outstanding, while in NYC, the Linnaeans do free walks in Central Park: http://linnaeannewyork.org/index.html
There is lots of places to go and many interested and helpful birders. You'll have a great summer!

if in Central Park, I lead bird walks there - for the last 20 years:

send me an email and I will add you to my weekly newsletter - and if your are interested, Deborah Allen and I have published scientific and popular articles on the birds of NYC including studies on the night migration of birds as seen from the top of the Empire State Building; the owls of NYC; the American Kestrels of NYC; the flora of Central Park; the flora of NYC...etc.

Hi,

I recently moved to Syracuse, haven't yet experienced summer birding in this area but as the spring migrants return I can let you know what areas are good. Beaver Lake Nature Center so far has been good for winter birding and I expect it will harbor some warblers and other eastern forest birds that would be new for you- it's a nice area with hardwood and hemlock forests, a lake, and a bog, plus a visitor center with feeders.
