How to setup H4N (1 Viewer)

Nice mic, I have the same. I assume you have the K6 adapter which takes the battery

http://en-uk.sennheiser.com/modular-microphone-system-k-6

It does in fact also let you use P48 power from the recorder, but use a battery first to make things simple. Use a XLR to XLR cable to the recorder, socket 1 (underneath, left)

Switch on mic. you should see a short flash red from the LED, otherwise your battery is no good.

Use Stereo mode for simplicity to get something easily Or Stamina, which is very similar. There is a switch in the battery compartment marked stamina which sets you into stamina mode. This does two good things, one is give you more battery life and the other is reduce some of the complexity of the features that you don't need. But you can only record at 44.1kHz ISTR - this is a good choice.

Select mic 1 button on front of recorder , this should light up.

Press record. Should flash red ISTR. If you plug in headphones to the socket onthe right hand side you should be able to hear through the mic, adjust listening volume there. Adjust recording volume on the other side of the machine, up/down buttons next to SD card slot

Adjust recording level so signal peaks at about -12dB on the meters

Press record again, should be steady red, you are now actually recording.

Stop and play work as you would expect

That should get you going. You will have a stereo record of which only the left channel has useful information. You can fix this later on with the Mono Mix function (page 67)

To get it set exactly you need to take a little time to use the menu function and the book. Use

WAV format, 44.1kHz (easy for CD) or 48kHz (not possible in stamina)

LoCut on input of about 100Hz is good to reduce some wind noise and handling noise, birds do not make noises that low. On your microphone K6 module the red switch should be to the right, which is also lo-cut to reduce wind nose

You never want to use auto level (Auto level off, P70)

Pre rec (page 67) is a nice feature of this machine, set it to on. If you want to record something like a Cettis Warbler which only makes a nosie after logn periods of quiet, monitor in record pause (flashing LED) and press rec again when you hear the sound, and you will have all of the song including 2 secs before you pressed record

You can throw the battery in the mic away and power the mic from the Zoom if you set the phantom power (p32) 24 V is good enough and within spec for the K6. Not having to worry about the battery in the mic or remembering to to switch it off in the field after you have finished is a very nice thing, particularly when you start recording early in the morning and discover you didn't turn the mic switch off last time!

It has been a while since i tested this machine, but it was good. Just a lot of stuff in the menus the wildlife recordist doesn't need like all the DSP filtering to make it sound like a tube amp ;)
