I found exactly the same problem with my MV500AH head - fine with the scope but found myself fighting the spring when trying to take photos.
The spring is very easy to remove - I can't remember exactly how the head comes apart but it wasn't complicated. I just grabbed the spring with a rag and it popped out then reassembled and now it's fine. If you're in any doubt you could always take photos of each stage of dissassembly to make sure it goes back together OK.
