Superb Brambling study, Phil. They are special in this plumage. Suddenly 'Baltimore Oriole' comes to mind funnily enough (it's just the plumage mate!) Another fine example of Mr Baber's uncanny ability to chronicle birds with pen and paint that are also works of art.

Finished. An exercise in "Controlled Mess..."B
1. Pre-finished.
2. Bullfinch in June Elder finished.
(Designer's Gouache, Water-Colour Pencil on Bristol Board.)
3. A photo crop of the Bullfinch in question.

Ken, I really don't know why it's called a Bullfinch. Maybe because it has a "bull-neck", or no apparent neck? Would love to find out though! In Poland it is called Gil (pron "geel.") Presumably after its call.
Or do you prefer some of these other names?

Hi Phil , you have captured this male Bullfinch brilliantly , i really like all the vibrant colours , and i will definately have to try Gouache water-coloured pencils :t:

That's really lovely Phil - the foliage work is very striking indeed and a perfect bullfinch as counterpoint.

Yes, I'm immediately struck by all the foliage. Quite a nice color composition, with it being a perfect counterpoint to the bullfinch as Tim says.
I've been meaning to look up the bulfinch in my only European bird guide, Lars Jonsson's, and I finally got around to it today. And I have to say he really emphasizes that stoutness. Almost looks like it should be renamed SumiFinch.! In either case you've both portrayed it in such a way that I think I'd be able to instantly ID it if by some rare chance I were ever to see one.

The Bullfinch has not reappeared on the same twig. Guess it was just a "one-off" idiom...
