Has anyone worked out what they consider to be the ideal menu settings for these two features that still manage to preserve good feather detail etc?
You might be interested in this test I've just done using FZ1000 video footage in 4K photo mode.
I set the camera running in 4K photo mode.
The footage was then edited in Power Director software. I selected the short section of video I wanted then set the video speed to 0.2 times the original speed. I also used the PowerDirector image stabilisation software because the video was taken hand held. The result can be seen on the link below

This effectively gives 4K slomo from any 4K video stream.
The FZ1000 does smooth 1080p slomo but the above method allows slomo from any 4K video stream.
Recorded a piece of 4K video today of a pair of Blue tits checking out an old Woodpecker nest from last summer. They eventually went inside.
The attached image is a jpeg grabbed from the 4K footage, cropped but no post processing.
................but the benefit of 4K is that you can "grab" exactly the frame you wish AND still have high quality video footage. Horses for courses.

Out today with FZ1000. Image of goldfinch grabbed from 4K video.
Used manual focus with focus peaking, due to branch in foreground. Feeder was in quite a dark corner under trees.
No post processing just resized for upload.

I was out along our, very windy, shoreline today with the FZ1000. Attached are a few more images grabbed off 4K video footage, cropped but no post processing. I've still to get a lot more familiar with this camera but I think there is great potential in this method. The footage was shot in Shutter priority at 1/8000 sec.
I feel that the FZ1000 is best suited to relatively close work. It will be great when a manufacturer produces a super zoom like the new Nikon with 4K recording. That would open up a whole new dimension.
scodgerott, those are great pictures! Did you use the camera's ability to grab the images? I haven't tried that method yet.
One thing that these huge data files has done is to get me to delete a lot more footage than I used to do, good housekeeping.
