Central Panama - some notes

Here are some notes from our recent trip to central Panama:

Season: until mid December it can be still very rainy. A trip in January would have been better.

Panama City: the rush hour starts as early as 6 am. Avoid it.

Panama Viejo: the eastern section is closed on Mondays. If you want to visit it however, talk to the guard.

Tocumen Marshes: now this place is completely lost due to development.

Gamboa: the Rainforest Discovery Center got very productive trails and - according to another birder who did compare - its tower is at least as good for birding as the expensive Canopy Tower Lodge.
Guido Berguido, situated in Gamboa, got very good hummingbird feeders in his garden. He also provides lodging and transports (ask in advance).

Playa del Agallito: mangroves seem productive only during high tide. The beach is very good for waders even when there is low tide. During high tide many waders visit the lagoons next to the road.

El Valle: half a day guiding by Mario Bernal is highly recommended (Via la Mozas, just ask in town or at Cabanas Potosi,, 60 USD pP)! He even speaks English.
Via la Mozas just past the villa with the huge garden (left turn) is very productive.

Santa Fé: by now the road across the ridge down the Caribbean slope is completely tarmaced. The forest here could be very productive, especially due to the gradient of altitude (unfortunately we had lots of rain).

Cerro Azul: The lower terrace of La Posada de Ferhisse (below the pool to the left) is very good for birding (views down and across the valley). The place itself is quite run down but cheap.
