Cuban Bird Guides (1 Viewer)

We are looking to stay at Varadero this year and wonder if there are any local English speaking Bird Guides that would show us Zapata and other nature reserves. The bee hummingbird would be good? They would need their own car.

In March-April this year (2015), spent 30 days solo driving around western and central Cuba. It was brilliant, not least due to lovely Cuban people. At Playa Larga, I would recommend Angel Martinez. With him I saw Bee Hummingbird, Zapata Sparrow, Zapata Wren, Blue-headed and Grey-headed Quail Dove, Stygian Owl, Cuban Screech Owl, Fernandina's Flicker, Yellow-headed Warbler, plus loads more. He's a great guide and great guy. He charges about 30CUC (£20) for a morning, 45CUC (£30) for a full day. He and Andy Mitchell were the guys who 'rediscovered' the legendary Zapata Rail. He's a thoroughly great guy, with a taste for Polo's. You may be able to get his contact details through Andy Mitchell: http://www.cubabirdingtours.com/index.asp Andy is a real old Cuba-hand and arranged my itinerary for me - great bloke.
