Hi all

At first I thought they were water boatmen as they looked like they were above the surface. But they look like small fish? The were thousands of them on the surface of one of the larger ponds at RSPB Middleton Lakes, West Midlands, UK.

Can anyone ID them - sorry I could not get a great photo.

Hi Julie,

They are whirlygig beetles, none of the heteroptera spin around on the surface like that, and the whirlygigs are usually found in huge numbers on the surface like you describe and your photos. There are only nine species in Britain but all require critical examination for accurate naming.

Cheers.

Slightly enhanced image

Done a bit of processing on the image but haven't improved it dramatically but the large eyes are visible. Look like Whirlies to me.

And Gentlemen this is not the place to trade insults. It is against house rules.
