Birds of India (1 Viewer)

Tempted to order this book at just over $2NZ plus free p&p but it must be a mistake. That said not really far to pay this as the publisher is going to make a big loss and would that impact on future books?

Who knows if it's Princeton or the Book Depository who is losing money here - but in either case they are huge companies for whom a hundred books will be immaterial. Google tells me Princeton's annual sales are between $10M and $25M. We are not talking about a small specialist natural history bookshop or publisher who might fail without our support.

Murray,
If Princeton (a University Press) can't be bothered to check their own adverts (eg for the first book advertised, to cite 'Aruba' (correct) in the texts and 'Aurba' in the titling, then they deserve to lose money if they can't get their prices right! Have you handled any cases where a firm lost a case simply because of spelling inaccuracies?

I checked the India book again and if you change the url to .co.uk , it still comes up at US$1.51. It also says 7 days to go now. So I place an order this time for both it and the Aruba book. I also ordered another guidebook so maybe we can consider these 'errors' to be a little incentive like a shop keeper selling something below cost just to get people in the store to look around: some people buy just that item, others buy additional things!

For the other book, I ordered a seabird guidebook and paid $9 more for the Helm version- I don't want all my books to be from princeton!

Well, that´s one way to quite dubiously reason to justify something that´s evidently wrong. If you like to order 'The Birds of Aruba" for €1.19 - go ahead.

I suppose it would be BD, not the publisher? Same for that Aurba spelling.

People, I have been buying from BD for many years now; they ALWAYS seem to have the lowest prices, ie, 25% off for all pre-orders for a start. These recent prices are obviously a mistake but the staff doesn't check their database thoroughly though, that's for sure!

The Indian and ABC books are on their site for a week or so now... surely that should have been corrected by now? I am sorry, but I bought the ABC book and believe it will be send at that ridiculously low price. I do not feel wrong about it at all. After all, I think I bought for about a thousand euros worth of books from BD already! Too bad I had already bought the Helm version of the Indian book (from BD as well!), otherwise I would gladly have bought that one too...

donation

Anticipating to get two books at a very good price, I have just sent a compensating donation to a project that I find fascinating:
http://www.operationmigration.org/F...0.12&utm_campaign=EBJan30.12&utm_medium=email

Those guys have tried to lead another class of young Whooping Cranes to the designated wintering grounds. Yet, for the first time after 10 successful years, weather conditions did not allow for getting there in time. The birds have now lost their urge to migrate. So I figured, getting some donation might lift the spirits of the human participants. Whether that project will lead to a self sustaning second population of the cranes is still in the clouds, but I think it's a good try.

And if I don't end up getting the books (that are not really urgent buys anyway), I won't exactly go broke either.

It's 4 days to go, according to the website. My order has since been charged to my credit card. So I presume that price has really been honoured. And since it's still there, maybe it's there intentionally? Hard to believe though.

The book depository just sent me a message of 24 hour offers starting tomorrow ...

Niels

Same here, but I doubt that I want to spend 24 hours on the computer just to find that I already have all the books that are on offer, or at least those that are of interest to me. I'll certainly look into the event, however.

"1 days to go"

If you have not ordered yet, hurry up in case you want the book. Price is still low, and I quoted their site above. ;)

After seeing the volumes of books they sell, it's clear they won't go broke if it's really not intended to be so low.

Got my book yesterday, together with the Cotingas&Manakins one. Two fine additions to my library. Time to dump the first edition with its crazy sequence of species.

BD has temporarily run out of the Princeton version, seems the low price led to a fast exhaustion of the initial supply. The Helm version with its somewhat different title is still in stock. But the price differs depending on the address one uses. Thus, it's still rather odd.
